X‑ray imaging – what it is and when it’s used

X‑ray (radiography) is a quick, painless scan that uses a very small dose of radiation to create images of the inside of your body. It’s most often used to check bones and joints, but can also show the chest and other areas.

What is an X‑ray?

During an X‑ray, a controlled beam passes through your body and is captured by a digital detector. Dense structures like bone appear white, while softer tissues appear in shades of grey. Most exams take just a few minutes and need no special preparation.

Why X‑rays are helpful

  • Fast: Most scans are done in under 5 minutes.
  • Affordable: One of the lowest‑cost imaging tests.
  • Easy to access: Available in many clinics and hospitals across the UAE.
  • Safe and proven: Uses a low dose of radiation with a long safety record.
  • Great for bones: Ideal for spotting fractures, dislocations and bone disease.
  • Simple prep: Usually no fasting, injections or special steps needed.

What to expect

• You may stand, sit or lie down depending on the area being checked.
• A lead apron may be used to protect nearby parts of your body.
• One or more images are taken from different angles.
• A specialist radiologist reviews your images and sends a report to your doctor, usually within 24 hours.

Common X‑ray exams

  • Chest X‑ray: Lungs, heart size, ribs.
  • Limb X‑ray: Arms and legs for fractures or injuries.
  • Skull X‑ray: Skull bones and sinuses.
  • Spine X‑ray: Alignment and spinal fractures.
  • Hand & wrist X‑ray: Fractures, arthritis, bone age in children.
  • Pelvis & hip X‑ray: Hip fractures and joint problems.

Is it safe?

Yes. The radiation dose from a medical X‑ray is small and carefully controlled, similar to what you receive naturally from the environment over a few days or weeks. Our partner centres use modern equipment and follow strict safety rules to keep your exposure as low as reasonably possible.
