Why Pregnancy Ultrasounds Follow a Schedule

Pregnancy ultrasounds are timed to specific weeks because each stage of fetal development answers different questions. A scan done too early or too late may miss the window for accurate measurements or genetic screening markers.

Your referring doctor will usually issue a referral for each scan at the appropriate week, rather than one open-ended request for 'an ultrasound'. This is because ultrasound findings are most useful when matched to the correct gestational stage.

The Dating Scan: Weeks 6–10

The dating scan, sometimes called the viability scan, is usually the first scan of pregnancy. It confirms that the pregnancy is inside the uterus, checks for a heartbeat, and estimates the due date based on measurements of the embryo.

This scan is often done transvaginally in early weeks, since the embryo is too small to see clearly through the abdomen. It also checks for multiple pregnancies (twins or more), which affects how later scans and care are planned.

Because due-date accuracy depends on getting this measurement early, many obstetricians in Dubai and Sharjah prefer the dating scan is not delayed past 10 weeks.

The NT (Nuchal Translucency) Scan: Weeks 11–14

The nuchal translucency scan measures the fluid space at the back of the fetal neck, one part of first-trimester screening for chromosomal conditions such as Down syndrome. It is combined with a maternal blood test — sometimes arranged through a laboratory — to calculate a risk score.

This scan has a strict window: it must be performed between roughly 11 weeks 2 days and 13 weeks 6 days, according to international guidelines such as those used by fetal medicine societies. Outside this range, the measurement is not considered reliable.

The NT scan also checks fetal anatomy that is already visible at this stage, and confirms the pregnancy dating established earlier.

The Anomaly Scan: Weeks 18–22

The anomaly scan, also called the mid-pregnancy or 20-week scan, is the most detailed structural check of the pregnancy. The centre's radiologist or sonographer examines the fetal brain, heart, spine, kidneys, limbs, and placenta position.

This is usually the scan where the sex of the baby can be identified, though the primary purpose is structural screening, not gender reveal. If a marker or possible anomaly is noted, your referring doctor may request a follow-up scan or refer you for specialist fetal medicine review.

Placental position is also assessed here. A low-lying placenta found at this stage is common and is typically rechecked later in pregnancy, since the placenta often moves as the uterus grows.

Growth and Wellbeing Scans: Weeks 28 Onward

From around 28 weeks, some pregnancies are monitored with additional growth scans, particularly if there is a multiple pregnancy, a prior low placenta, gestational diabetes, or reduced fetal movement. These scans check fetal weight estimate, amniotic fluid level, and blood flow.

Blood flow studies often use a Doppler ultrasound, which measures how blood moves through the umbilical cord and fetal vessels. This helps assess whether the placenta is supplying the baby adequately, especially in later pregnancy.

Not every pregnancy needs extra growth scans beyond the anomaly scan. Whether they are arranged depends on your referring doctor's assessment of risk factors as the pregnancy progresses.

In both Dubai and Sharjah, ultrasound scans are performed at imaging centres, each licensed by the relevant UAE health authority, and generally require a referral from your obstetrician or a licensed clinic.
